Crushed flutes and fuzzy cutting edges are two of the most common slitting quality defects in corrugated production. They affect downstream converting quality and finished box appearance directly and raise scrap rates.

Most of these issues do not require equipment upgrades. They can be fixed quickly with targeted on-site checks and adjustments.

1. Check for Cutting-Edge Condition

Common causes

Dull cutting edges from delayed grinding or adhesive buildup on the knife surface that adds extra cutting friction.

Inspection Steps

  • Inspect the cutting edge under proper lighting for dullness or small chips
  • Check for starch adhesive residue on the knife body and edge

Solutions

  • Regrindedges to restore a clean and sharp cutting profile
  • Clean knife surfaces thoroughly to remove adhesive buildup

2. Check for Tension & Knife Support

Common causes

Insufficient cardboard tension or a worn and uneven knife pad surface fails to support the cardboard effectively during slitting.

Troubleshooting steps

  • Verify that unwinding and slitting tension settings match your board grade
  • Check the knife pad surface for wear marks, dents or excessive gaps

Solutions

  • Adjust web tension to keep the board stable through the slitting station.
  • Regrind or replace the worn knife pad to provide stable and uniform support

3. Check for Board Moisture & Cutting Depth

Common causes

  • High moisture content of corrugated board that causes flute crushing
  • Incorrect cutting depth that tears the corrugated board instead of slitting it clean

Inspection steps

  • Test board moisture content, especially for high-humidity production environments
  • Verify cutting depth settings and check if the knife cuts through all board layers cleanly

Solutions

  • Adjust board conditioning settings for high-moisture stocks
  • Fine-tune cutting depth to achieve clean slitting without crushing the flute structure

Systematic on-site inspection locates the root causes quickly and restores stable cutting quality with minimal downtime.
