A leading new energy battery manufacturer required a more reliable slitting solution for advanced electrode materials.

During production of a new battery material, the customer experienced rapid knife wear during electrode slitting. The electrode surface was coated with aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) ceramic material, which significantly increased material hardness and abrasion during the cutting process.

The existing knife solution achieved only approximately 10,000–20,000 meters of service life, resulting in frequent knife replacement and reduced production efficiency.

The customer required a high wear-resistant knife solution to improve knife life while maintaining stable slitting performance.

Challenge

The main production challenges included:

· High hardness of ceramic-coated electrode materials;
· Severe abrasive wear on the cutting edge;
· Short knife service life during continuous production;

The application used a contact slitting method, requiring the knife edge to maintain durability and cutting accuracy under continuous abrasive conditions.

A standard knife solution could not meet the customer’s production requirements. A detailed evaluation of knife material and application conditions was required.

Root Cause Analysis

Shengong’s technical team conducted an on-site analysis covering:

· Electrode material characteristics;
· Ceramic coating composition;
· Slitting method and cutting conditions;
· Existing knife wear performance.

The analysis showed that the primary limitation was insufficient wear resistance of the existing knife material.

The aluminum oxide ceramic coating created a high-abrasion cutting environment, accelerating edge wear and reducing knife service life.

For this application, optimizing knife material performance was the key factor to improving slitting stability and extending knife life.

Customized Knife Solution

Based on the application analysis, Shengong optimized the knife material specification and developed a customized electrode slitting knife solution for ceramic-coated battery materials.

By selecting a higher wear-resistant knife material and adapting the knife performance to the customer’s cutting conditions, the solution significantly improved edge durability during continuous slitting operation.

· Knife life increased from approximately 10,000–20,000 meters to 88,000 meters;
